On February 19, 2019, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed a bill expanding the state’s paid family leave and short-term disability laws. Assembly Bill 3987 and Senate Bill 844 apply to the New Jersey Family Leave Insurance (NJFLI) benefit, allowing NJ employees time to bond with a newborn or care for a sick family member.
The bills provide for extra protection under the New Jersey Family Leave Act (NJFLA) which provides for job protection.
The bills also expand the temporary disability insurance law (NJTDI), which provides for wage continuation in certain situations when an employee is unable to work due to a medical condition.
