Health Benefits Top Employees’ Wish List

Health insurance is the most valuable benefit to employees, with vision and dental benefits close behind.

The Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) conducted a study in 2016. The study found that 87 percent of surveyed employees said that employer-based health insurance is either extremely or very important. Many were concerned about the future of Obamacare. About half wanted their employers to continue paying benefits regardless of what happens to the program, while 20 percent wanted employers to give them cash to put toward health benefits.

MetLife’s 2017 Employee Benefit Trends Study found that more than half the employees surveyed said that health, dental and vision benefits — in that order — were an essential benefit.

Vision insurance hasn’t always been viewed as an important benefit, but the importance of eye care coverage is becoming clearer. HCMS Group, a human capital risk management firm, found that individuals who receive annual comprehensive eye exams were more likely to enter the health care system earlier for treatment of serious health conditions.

Paul Fronstin, director of EBRI’s Health Research and Education Program, said employers who offer a strong employee benefits package — especially health coverage — should have a significant competitive advantage over other companies in attracting desirable workers.
